Portrait of a Halberdier - Master Study

The original painting by Pontormo was made much later than Cennini’s book, by at least 100 years. In that time oil painting had evolved. So, while Cennini does provide some brief lessons on oil painting, I would guess there is much more to be discovered in later period painting manuals, such as Vasari on Technique or Merrifield’s Medieval and Renaissance Treatises on the Arts of Painting.

So, while this was fun, it was really not the best choice for Project Cennini. I made oil paint from period pigments, but it is about all that applies. I think the biggest lesson I have learned from this and other earlier Projects is to more carefully consider how each piece applies to the text.
